| As
research nurse for the Vanguard Project, Mary Lou Miller
offers HIV testing and counselling to Vanguard participants,
primarily out of the Downtown South Community Health Centre,
but also out of the Vanguard office at The
Centre (formerly the Gay & Lesbian Centre). She can
also provide STD advice, immunizations and referrals. Miller
also recruits participants by organizing events such as pizza
parties for street youth.
Background: Until retiring
in August '95, Miller worked as a street nurse and STD
counsellor for the Ministry of Health, working at the Richards
Street Clinic, the ATEC/STD clinic and the Bute Street Clinic at
the Gay & Lesbian Centre.
From 1987 to 1990, Miller took her
nursing skills to the Bahamas, where she worked for the Bahamian
Ministry of Health.
Prior to that, Miller worked in
pediatrics for 23 years at the Toronto Hospital for Sick
Children, eventually becoming the Senior Nurse Manager.
Education: Miller studied
Health Administration at York
University in Toronto, Ontario, and is a graduate of the
School of Nursing at Toronto General Hospital.
